Item Child Theology in an African Context: A Focus on Children With Disability(Child Theology movement, 2013-11) Olivia Nassaka BanjaThis paper is focused on child theology in the African context with particular reference to children with a disability. It attempts to answer three major questions: What is the African perception of children with disability? What does the Bible say about disability? How can the church in Africa bring children with disability into the centre of her ministry? To answer these questions this paper discusses the African worldview on children with disability, the common types of child disability in Africa, the Bible and disability and concludes with a discussion on the approaches to child theology and disability in Africa.Item Assessing the Library and Information Advocacy and Marketing Services: A case study of Uganda Christian University Library(Library and Information Services - Uganda Christian University, 2017-08) Stephanas GalinnyaIt is acknowledged widely that libraries and archives have for a very long time endure from their image and visibility problems. This is probably why many librarians and archivists now recognise marketing as an essential topic; for example, in a survey conducted in Canada in 1997, (Savard, 2000 Pages 12-32). 84.4% of the respondents answered that marketing is important for library and information services (LIS). Similar results were contemplated earlier in the United Kingdom. (Collins and Glyptis, 1992) Librarians also think that marketing is a new issue for LIS, something that only emerged during the last three decades. Although marketing was more formally introduced in the profession after the 1970s it is engaging to understand that in North America at least, librarians took on marketing techniques as early as 1876, as Kleindl (a marketing professor, illustrated how libraries at this stage were innovative in many marketing strategies: segmenting and targeting clienteles, using publicity, direct mail, streetcar signs, telephone solicitation, banners, etc. The twentieth century library, the progressive library, would throw its doors open to all and encourage them to come in and join in the building of a community cultural center)(Kleindl, 2007) and Renberg (who traces history of marketing since 1876 and goes till formal marketing starts taking place in 1970, confirms the occurrences of terms such as, advertising in 1896, management in 1897, outreach in 1903, and extension work in 1909, in library literature, mainly in public libraries) demonstrated in their articles (Renberg, 2000 pages 5-11). Library and information science, it is multidisciplinary, embracing virtually every sphere of human endeavour. Many LIS and marketing may seem not to have a kind of interdependent relationship and therefore discrepancy. The impression of those with such view is that marketing is perceived to be a primarily concerned with buying and selling which is a profit-driven as against library which is a social service oriented centre and not for profit making. Academic libraries they are support departments affiliated to educational institutions playing a pivotal role by providing required library and information services to support academic activities and contribute in the development of their institutions and also undisputedly as accepted worldwide. Marketing techniques and strategies can be adopted for the promotion of library and information services with academic libraries in particular (Bhratt, 2009). Marketing offers both a theory and a process by which academic libraries can link results, products and roles. Marketing principles can assist them in determining their future and identify quality products and services, materials and programmes. Modern marketing can determine how the library will look like which can also determine the products it will offer.Item How to Manage Conflict in a Library Work Place(Library and Information Services - Uganda Christian University, 2018-08) Stephanas GalinnyaConflict is a scenario where discrepancy in values, attitudes and power rise to a contention and opposition between two or more parties. This is due to increased emphasis on participation, innovation, teamwork, diversity and creativity in an environment which has an extraordinary competition. Pondy (1967: 891) defined conflict as the process which starts from when one group detect that another has blighted or is about to discontent; then, some concern is raised. The increasing roles, assumptions and enticements, which creates ambivalence and dilemma. Conflict can result into calamitous consequences for teams, institutions and individuals. However, it can be profitable to the institution. This means that the leading managers/ employers and team members should know how to resolve and manage conflict in a way that becomes a steering force for change and achieving the institution’s goals. Nelson and Quick (2006: 422) identified the capacity to manage conflict with demonstrative intelligence. Any employer with high levels of enthusiastic intelligence is able to control his/her emotions. He/she must be able to understand the variance perspectives that people bring to a situation and can accelerate or assist the search for a common ground. The introduction to autonomous team work in a University library environment locates the burden or authority of conflict resolution enduringly in the hands of a work team. Members in the library team must learn how to identify conflict and assign with it instantly and directly. Conflict has a number of problems raised for many work teams, which raise a need for actual / accurate training of team members to have a resolution.Item Effective Utilisation of Library Resources(School of Education - Uganda Christian University, 2019-06-18) Stephanas GalinnyaThe major aim of any university library is to support teaching, learning and research activities of its parent institution. University library must therefore, make sure that their resources are well utilized as this is essential for educational development of the students (Onifade, Ogbuiyi and Omeluzor, 2013). These libraries exist to enhance the acquisition of knowledge by their clientele through the provision of reading materials - book and non-book for the purposes of teaching, learning and research. A university library, according to Mallaiah, Kumbar and Mudhol (2008) occupies the central and primary place in teaching and research, therefore, it has to meet the diverse and growing needs of educational programme at the undergraduate, post–graduate and research levels. Since academic libraries, according to Adetimirin (2007), are to acquire and organised both printed and electronic information for accessibility and use by its clientele. It was therefore necessary to adopt information and communication technologies (ICTs) at Uganda Christian University Libraries in the process of lending and borrowing its collections.Item Fathers and Fatherhood for Sons and Daughters (Fathering Children)(Family Conference - Uganda Christian University, 2019-08) Stephanas GalinnnyaChildren who have caring fathers in their future cannot become culprits of sexual abuse because of the excellent relationship they have experienced with the influence of their father’s sexual behaviours. Instead mothers act as security guards in relationship to their sons and daughters. In this paper we shall discuss several matters concerning fatherhood parenting that is to say; the importance of fathers in the children’s life; because fathers impact a lot on the well-being starting from birth, emotional, security, confidence, environment and as children connect with others socially as they grow(Neale, 2015)(KAEBNICK, 2004). Discuss matters of whether it is necessary to have a father element in the child’s growth involving whether fathers make their children proud, and it promotes the inner strength and growth, supportive and affectionate, social development as well as cognitive of the child(Baskerville, 2002)(JORDAN-ZACHERY, 2008). The father’s role to the children is very important because there are central persons in the emotional well-being of the children and they are essential disciplinarians. Fathers importance in daughter’s life because they shape the self-esteem and psychological development of their daughters starting from the date of birth which is a bond key(Hazan & Zoabi, 2015)(Ling, 2017). As well boys also need their presence of their fathers because this helps them emulate what their fathers do and it bonds a good relationship(Browne, 2013). We shall also discuss what the bible states about fathers, God made it clear that fathers are created for a reason as it is stated in Exodus 20:12 “Respect your father and your mother, so that you may live a long time in the land that I am giving you.” This paper will also discuss the difference between a Dad and a father, whether fathers are necessary for the child’s healthy development and how the father’s relationship to both sons and daughters can be improved. It also address matters of father’s role in parenting, their role in the family, address issues of fathers who are narcissists and if they do love their children(Johnson & Young, 2016)(KIPPEN, EVANS, & GRAY, 2007). The Author will go ahead to present how mothers stop fathers relating to their children, the levels of love expressed to both son and daughters by the father. Another important matter will be to find out whether babies also miss their fathers, how children resolve with the separation of parents, custody battles, how fathers manage parenting after separation(Edmeades, Pande, MacQuarrie, Falle, & Malhotra, 2012). Matters of what the bible addresses to the children and how much more will their father in heaven have for them. We shall also discuss matters of fathers who a deadbeat in their families how do children coup up with such parents. In conclusion what we expect from the children’s end such as; how they express themselves to their fathers, and their role in a family(Cundy, 2015)(Browne, 2013). In nutshell, all the above areas of discussion are based on purely reviewed literature.Item The Effect of Digital Broadcasting Migration on Television Viewership(African Humanities Conference - College of Humanities, University of Dar es Salaam, 2023) Jane Mercy Muthoni KamunyiThe effect of digital broadcasting migration on television viewership study was done in Rubaga Division. The objectives were to assess the levels of knowledge about digital broadcasting migration and evaluate the digital broadcasting migration process in Uganda. A cross-sectional research design was used on a sample of 347 household and 10 key informants. The study showed that levels of knowledge about digital broadcasting migration was only 1.7%. The transition staggered from 2015 to 2018 with, 28.1%, 43%, 18.5% and 3.5% migrating in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively. The study concluded that delays in erecting required structures strained the transition with television viewers sensitization inadequately done. The standardization and importation were hampered causing last minute stampede and escalating transition costs. The study recommends the following be carried out: a) sensitization about use and benefits of digital broadcasting for consumers; b) a review to harmonize and standardize subscription fees; and c) a study review on the digital migration status for appropriate adjustments.Item Investigation on the potential use of waste paper to produce papercrete bricks(AIP Conference Proceedings, 2025-02-17) John Bosco Niyomukiza; Bernard Joseph Odeke; David Owori; Paul Tiboti; Moses Kiwanuka; Joel Webster MbujjeA significant demand has been placed on the building material industry, especially in the last decade due to the increasing population, which causes a chronic shortage of building materials. The current study aims at utilizing waste paper to produce papercrete bricks and study their engineering properties, a step towards sustainable development. Papercrete is rapidly gaining popularity in the building construction industry worldwide because of its environmental friendliness, low-cost and lightweight. The study considered literature and related ideas up to conceptualization and design of the trial ratio used in testing. Trial mixes of paper sludge, sand, and cement at different proportions made papercrete bricks of dimensions 220×110×102 mm. The tests conducted included compressive strength and water absorption. The mixes of paper sludge, sand, and cement in the ratio of 50, 35, and 15%, respectively, gave the best results. The compressive strength increased with the increase in the curing period. The rate at which the papercrete bricks absorbed water reduced as the curing period increased for all the papercrete trial mixes. It was concluded that percentages of paper sludge less than 50% are recommended for non-load bearing walls such as parapet walls and partition walls.
